today in the intro to digital class we are going to (if we can get it done!) take our abject self-portrait slideshows out of the lab and into public space for a video projection event. so i thought i better blog quickly about projection in contemporary art practices. first, take a look at the work of

Krzysztof Wodiczko

in and old post. also check the work of the graffiti research lab at eyebeam.

and the work of local, denver based painter and digital artist phillip faulkner (my homie!) is also very solid in thsi regard. check his projections of “time-based paintings.”

the important thing to consider here is the break-out of digital media into public space. think of architectural surfaces as skins. think of corridors as portals. etc. its fun to make art inside the box, but its even more fun to take out. of course you are all done with your abject self-portait slideshow thing, but check out this great video of phillip’s called “boy.”

This week in Web Art 1 we are watching a documentary about The Yes Men, a tactical media group that merges performance art with net.art to create challenging public spectacles that critique multi-national corporations and global financial institutions like the WTO. Of couse the timing here is brutal as we all watch with confusion as the global markets and economies take a tailspin. In a critically information based mediascape (to use arjun appadurai’s term) what are the connections between the increasing digital nature of global media, contemporary art practices, and demoratic distributions of power and knowledge? one answer is collaboration. this topic is dealt with by lawrence lessig in his book free-culture and his work with building the creative commons. Hopefully this inspires students and artist to get together more often, and not because this is some 60’s type call for love, but because the current global power formations have made it obvious. and also because chela sandoval has made it perfectly clear in her book methodology of the oppressed.

one of my favorite artists is william kentridge. i think his animations are among some of the most powerful in the history of the moving image. students in my 1531 course are working sequentially to produce a photographic slideshow that essentially functions as a slow moving animation. the topic?? abject self-portrait. art students are typically pushed towards the self portrait at the undergraduate level, and with good reason. kentridge’s work is not only abject (in terms of culture, nation and medium) but often he deals with and uses his own body for his characters. its a way of taking reposnsibility for the images you make and throughout the history of art one can find artists working on, through, about and from themselves. a nice technique that he uses is to split the fame in half and begin with a double representation on the same image. this is the main focus in stereoscope. i think this tactic or strategy can be used with success for the abject self-portrait. his use of charcoal to make his animations is also particularly wonderful because of the ways that charcoal-and especially erased charcoal-leaves a trace. what happens is the passage of time made plain, yet poetic. students-remember to make the passage of time a central theme in this work. can you invent a technique?

Project #2 Abject Self-Portrait Slideshow
Abject: The term Abjection literally means “the state of being cast out.” The concept of abject
exists in between the concept of an object and the concept of the subject, something alive yet not.
Often, the term space of abjection is also used, referring to a space that abjected things or beings
inhabit.
Tools: We will use Photoshop and flickr.com to achieve our goals. We will build on this
project over a number of days to gain full understanding of our tools and methods.
How to: This project will entail preparing or finding a minimum 20 images of equal size and
uploading them DAILY on flickr.com. The images will work together aesthetically, utilizing similar
design elements. This project will be output to screen in a slideshow format. Find or create
images that represent you. Using Photoshop (or The GIMP!), modify the images to create
continuity over time. an example of a flickr slide show is here
Objectives:
Preparing your images, (cropping, image size, levels) in Photoshop
Integrating images from Photoshop
Montaging your images in Photoshop using layers, opacities, and blending modes.
Using opacity and layering over time to create fades
Screen as output device
Use of both additive and subtractive methods in creating your images (cloning tool)
Questions: Compositionally, how do you lead the viewer from one image to the next? (In relation
to line, plane, shape, texture)
Is there a progression through time?

SINCE FLICKR IS IN THE DISCUSSION, we should consider the implications of Web 2.0 (a definition is here) in the creation of abject works of digital art. I think this can be explored fruitfully and with innovative results, but the challenge will be for the student to make a visual (or aural) connection beyond the slideshow (which easily embeds in your blog). students that are interested in using a web 2.0 technology besides flickr to create their abject self portrait should have a discussion with me about their ideas. what would be the current or most recent manifestation of the self in digital culture? is it your myspace or facebook? is it your avatar in second life? maybe youtube? google earth? take a look at terrance brown’s youtube portrait here.
