today in the intro to digital class we are going to (if we can get it done!) take our abject self-portrait slideshows out of the lab and into public space for a video projection event. so i thought i better blog quickly about projection in contemporary art practices. first, take a look at the work of
Krzysztof Wodiczko
in and old post. also check the work of the graffiti research lab at eyebeam.
and the work of local, denver based painter and digital artist phillip faulkner (my homie!) is also very solid in thsi regard. check his projections of “time-based paintings.”
the important thing to consider here is the break-out of digital media into public space. think of architectural surfaces as skins. think of corridors as portals. etc. its fun to make art inside the box, but its even more fun to take out. of course you are all done with your abject self-portait slideshow thing, but check out this great video of phillip’s called “boy.”
expanded cinema is important.
